Urdd

What is the Urdd?

The Urdd is one of the largest youth organisations in Europe, accepting around 56,000 members annually.  The Urdd was established to provide opportunities for pupils to learn and socialise through the medium of Welsh. Opportunities such as weekly urdd clubs, eisteddfodau, sports competitions, and residential centres like Llangrannog. More details of the Urdd’s work are detailed here About Us | Urdd Gobaith Cymru. Paying annual membership for the urdd is essential if your child would like to represent the school, and compete in the Eisteddfod or any sports competitions. Typically, sports competitions are open to pupils aged 7-11, with priority being given to the oldest pupils. The Urdd Eisteddfod offers opportunities to compete in stage and homework competitions to all pupils in the school. Competitions are grouped by age for pupils in year 2 and below, pupils in year 3 and 4, and pupils in years 5 and 6.

Weekly, the school offers Urdd Club on a Thursday evening. 

A programme of activities is organised each term which includes:

- arts and crafts

- sports

- gardening

- cooking

What is an eisteddfod?

An Eisteddfod is basically a competition. Most eisteddfod’s comprise of stage competitions and composition competitions, much like our own school eisteddfod. Many towns and villages throughout Wales hold an Eisteddfod, many of which are in Ceredigion.  A list of these can be seen here Testunau – CEC (steddfota.cymru) Penrhyn-coch village Eisteddfod is to be held in April annually. Many Support their local Eisteddfod by competing, and some who are very keen travel the length and breadth of the country competing in many an Eisteddfod – which can be lucrative if you mange to grab a monetary prize in each! The most infamous Eisteddfodau are The Llangollen International Eisteddfod, held in July, The National Eisteddfod held in August, and the Urdd National Eisteddfod, held in Whitsun Week/ May half term. All of these are week long festival of culture, with lots of stalls and activities.
